Volunteers Please
Investigating the effects of acupuncture: Can you help?
Researchers at the University of Southampton are investigating the way that acupuncture needling affects local blood circulation. Click on the link below to show/hide the details.
More information
Who do we need?
Healthy Female volunteers, (non-smokers and not taking the contraceptive pill), between 20 and 40, willing to experience acupuncture needling.
When?
You will be asked to come for two visits, one month apart.
The study began in October 2006 and is now looking for the last few volunteers.
What will happen?
At each visit 2 acupuncture points will be needled in the low back area, and the skin surface will be scanned by a non invasive laser Doppler scanner to detect any changes in superficial blood circulation. You will be lying comfortably, face down for approx 1 hour, but the needles will only be in for about 10 minutes each time.
You will be asked to complete 2 questionnaires, one about the sensations produced by the acupuncture needles and the other on your opinions on Complementary and Alternative therapies generally.
Each visit will take about 1 hour and you will receive £5 each time to cover the cost of car parking.
Where?
Wellcome Clinical Research Facility, Southampton General Hospital.
Who is undertaking this?
Val Hopwood, FCSP, PhD funded by the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.
Why?
We are investigating the physiological effects of acupuncture needling in order to understand better how it works.
